Dean Robert Crandell, more often referred to as simply Dean, was a National Security Agency (NSA) Division-sector cryptographer who invented the original MERCURY code alongside Leo Pedranski in the late 1980's, early 1990's, as originally mandated by the Reagan administration. Dean was murdered by Peter Burrell across the street from the London Guarantee Building on Michigan Avenue in Chicago when he went there to meet with inform Art Jeffries of MERCURY and the depth of his boss Nicholas Kudrow's conspiracy to capture and kill Simon Lynch.
