The United States of America is a federal republic located in North America, comprised of 50 states, a federal district, and multiple territories in the Caribbean and South Pacific. The nation declared its independence from Britain in 1776, but did not gain it until 1783. Involved in multiple international conflicts throughout the past century, the United States' biggest and most important conflict was World War II, which the nation was brought into by Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941. From virtually the moment WWII ended in July 1947, America entered into the Cold War with the Soviet Union (USSR), which lasted until the collapse of the latter in 1991, leaving the US as the sole superpower of the world. Shortly before the turn of the century, an event occurred in the American city of Chicago, Illinois, that may very well have changed the course of history and began a conflict between the FBI and a rogue sector of the NSA.
